It's been 50 years since someone shot and killed President John F. Kennedy in Dallas. [ UNKNOWN ] has been hit. [ INAUDIBLE ] people standby. 50 years of conspiracy theories. That, despite the finding of the Warren Commission, whose 889- page final report concluded, Lee Harvey Oswald was the lone assassin. A conclusion many people still have a hard time believing. U. S. Secretary of State John Kerry recently called it into question, though he declined to elaborate his doubts. I have serious doubts that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. There are the theories of people like this man, Arizona attorney Greg Zirbel, who believes Lyndon B.

Johnson played a role, and that Oswald was just the fall guy. Followers of historian and biographer Robert Caro have hoped for proof along similar lines, though Caro himself says nothing in his almost 40 years of research leads him to that conclusion. Film maker Oliver Stone, on the other hand, has suggested LBJ played a role in a cover- up but not necessarily in the assassination. But what makes JFK's death so right for conspiracy theories after all this time? More than 60 % of Americans still believe there was a conspiracy behind the assassination. Consider the motivations. Admittedly, the shooting death of an American president is firtile ground.

Power, influence and backroom dealings are definitely enough to spark the imagination. And consider, Kennedy had just faced down the Soviet Union in the Cuban Missle Crisis. There was the young president's goal of ending the Cold War, which some have suggested a CIA conspiracy to stop him. Others point to his support for the growing civil rights movement. Add the overall intrigue of the Kennedy family and the so- called Kennedy curse and, you've got quite the recipe for conspiracy. But, even author and private investigator Josiah Thompson, who himself has been looking into the murder for the better part of fifty years, concedes And yet, I don't think we get any closer to knowing what happened now, than we were, you know, 40, 45 years ago.
