Burned cars, blocked roads. This is what Mexico looked like days after cartel unrest raged across the country. Here's what you need to know about the cartel violence in Mexico. In 60s, the Mexican army killed the leader of a large drug cartel network known as El Mencho, which triggered widespread violence in 20 of the 32 states in Mexico, including Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state, where it will hold the World Cup qualifying matches. The violence also prompted a wave of trip cancellations, which accounts for nearly 9% of their total GDP. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has repeatedly said the government had the security situation under control throughout the week, but countries that will be competing for the World Cup in Mexico have expressed concerns.

It is worth noting that there is no report of travelers getting injured following the violence. Other popular tourist destinations like Cancun or Mexico City are largely unaffected by the violence, so it's probably safe to travel to Mexico.
