## Transcript

The state of California is telling Google to pump the brakes on its driver- less car plans. Or rather, to install brakes in the first place. Google's newest take on the driver- less car doesn't have brake or accelerator pedals, and doesn't even have a steering wheel. But the Wall Street Journal reports a new law in California requires a driver to be able to take immediate physical control of a vehicle on public roads if needed. As the outlook points out, Google could circumvent the law by testing its car on private streets. But the company says it will include a small temporary steering wheel and pedal system.

A car with a steering wheel and pedal system certainly seems like a good idea. And even a step in the direction of safety. But Google says it's pedaless car is very safe already. They have sensors that remove blind spots, and they can detect objects out to a distance of more than two football fields in all directions. We've capped the speed of these first vehicles at 25 miles per hour. The company notes that 1. 2 million people die worldwide in traffic- related incidents, and over 90 % of those accidents are due to human error. California's new rule is scheduled to take effect September 16th. Google plans to start testing its cars.

With pedals and steering wheels for now. On private roads, next month.
