## Transcript

Amazon is by far the largest distributor of books in the U. S ., which means many publishers depend on the retail juggernaut to keep their thin profit margin. But one publishing company, Hachette Book Group, has challenged Amazon and is now dealing with the consequences. I noticed right away that they've boosted the price to full price. They said it would take two to five weeks for my book to ship, even though I know it's in stock. Now, both Hachette and Amazon have signed a confidentiality agreement, so we're not totally sure what they're fighting about. But it likely has to do about who controls online pricing for books and how they're advertised.

A failure to resolve the conflict means Hachette, the publisher, is still trying to negotiate a new contract with Amazon, which has led to delayed shipments, no pre- order options, and higher prices, specifically on books from Hachette, America's fourth largest publisher. After remaining silent for a few weeks, Amazon released a statement about what it calls the business interruption. The statement encourages potential Hachette customers to go shop at Amazon's competitors, explains there will be no pre- orders from Hachette, and adds, we are not optimistic that this will be resolved soon. Hachette responded with a statement of its own, which said, among other things, Amazon indicates that it considers books to be like any other consumer good.

There are not. Hachette Book Group is one of five major book publishers found by a Federal court to have colluded with Apple to fix pricing for e- books. Hachette is the first of those five to have to negotiate a contract with Amazon since the court's ruling. And the way it all shakes out ] could set the precedent for who holds the strings in online publishing, the retailer giants or the publishers. Thanks for watching, I'm Jamaal Andrews.
