And while fentanyl may not be as immediately familiar to many people as other opiates like Percocet or Oxycontin, the drug's use is on the rise. Here are five things. You need to know about Fentanyl. Beginning with this, number one, it is extremely potent. Addiction expert Ben Levenson tells People its very, very powerful. 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine and And 25 to 50 times more potent than heroin. Number two, Fentanyl's medical uses are now typically pain management following surgery or for chronic pain. But according to Levinson, that was never the intention. He tells People this. Fentanyl was utilized initially to make the death experience painless. It was never intended to be used during the course of someone's life to manage pain. It is extremely over prescribed, highly sought after by addicts. It hits you fast and it wears off fast so it's not a good drug for someone who is for instance recovering from knee surgery. Although it's widely prescribed it was never designed for that. 3. Fentanyl is administered in a variety of ways. Medically it can come as a spray taken orally administered intravenously or even as a lollipop which Levenson says is highly sought after. It can also be made into a powder and snorted Similar to cocaine, one gram of pure Fetanyl can be cut into approximately 7 thousand doses for street sale.
