And even though the company they're striking at is privately owned, they say their problems are the government's fault. -[ Foreign Language ] >> The densely populated Nile Delta is the center of Egyptian industry which includes the production of the famed Egyptian cotton. -[ Foreign Language ] >> But in recent years, economic globalization policies coupled with the hardship of the global recession have made life increasingly difficult for Egyptian workers in a country where fifth of the population lives on less than $ 1 a day. -[ Foreign Language ] >> Increasingly, that frustration is translating into strikes, sit- ins and factory occupations, as Egyptian workers and professionals alike demand better work and pay conditions from an authoritarian regime that they say has failed to protect them by worsening economy. -[ Foreign Language ]-- >> I can say that the Egyptians generally are well- known for not participating in politics. >> This is Saad al- Husseini. He's a member of parliament from Al- mahalla Al- kubra and also a local leader in Egypt's largest opposition group, the Muslim Brotherhood. -[ Foreign Language ]-- >> But the past two years have been really bad and have pushed Egyptians into a situation that they've never seen before. -[ Foreign Language ]-- >> They go on strikes to achieve their economic and social rights. So for three years, Egyptians have been going on strike, continuous repetitive strikes. Most of these strikes, economic and social were successful in achieving the demands to some extent. >> This is democracy. This is people taking control of their lives, and their livelihood, and their incomes, and they are just telling the powers that lead that you cannot keep on dictating their bad situation forever. >> Hossam el- Hamalawy has followed the labor unrest for years as a journalist and blogger in Cairo. >> We have here in Egypt, you know, I mean, a saying, [ Foreign Language ], " You can't make a sweet drink out of a rotten fish ." And the Mubarak's dictatorship and the Mubarak's family are all a rotten fish. It doesn't matter if we have Mubarak senior, Mubarak junior, I mean, they're all more or less, you know, I mean, from the same rotten fish.
