## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] It's at just the moment that you want to look the other way, that Jim makes you pay attention. When you see one of Jim's photograph's, the first thing you notice are the people. He always puts the people first. He wants you to feel their humanity. Jim is probably amassed. Speaker: [ MUSIC ] The largest single visual archive of a disparate amount of man's inhumanity to man. Speaker: Jim is an incredible perfectionist. And even the word, perfectionist, doesn't do justice to what he does. Speaker: Jim has the mind of a political scientist. And he has the visual instincts of an artist. [ MUSIC ] No matter what Jim ever says about his photographs.

He doesn't want it to be about him, he wants it to be about the people. He wants to do anything in the world to make a change for them in some way, or to change consciousness. That's his whole mission, that's the big picture for him. [ MUSIC ] That's one reason the images are so powerful, they are so compelling visually. But the message in the missiles so, just, extremely important. And so, the fact that he has been able to go to places that are so difficult to navigate as a journalist and bring back from them images that. Communicate as powerfully as they do both in our artistic level and a journalistic level is what sets them apart.

[ MUSIC ] Photography is one of the few mediums. Images that compress a lot into a small space and Jim is able to have that space be impactful. Constantly because of the subjects he's covering but also because he does have an artful eye. He may say he's not an artist but he's not really telling you the truth. He is to his bones an artist and a journalist. He had a, a messenger. He's a man on a mission. [ MUSIC ] If you look at the arc of Jim's career. Over 30 years, he's always at the place of, often most suffering, most violence, where the type of tectonic plates of modernism and the old world are hitting each other.

Which is why he is one of the great photo- journalist of our time who has born witness. To the extraordinary changes. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] He has this great understanding of. Of what he's doing as a photographer. Not only just in terms of image making. But in terms of communication. And, and that's one of his true gifts. [ MUSIC ] I once asked Jim, after venturing into the heart of darkness, and seeing the horrors that he's seen and witnessed. In his life if he felt he still had the capacity to love. And he told me that doing the work that he does is an act of love. And I think that says everything about his heart and compassion.
