It's one of the most secretive banks in the world. And from this new report, we can learn a lot about the church. Here's what you need to know. [ MUSIC ] The bank was founded in 1942 and is officially called the Institute for Religious Works, or IOR. The Vatican has long insisted it's a unique financial institution and that typical banking regulations don't necessarily apply. The Vatican decided to share their financials publicly for the first time after being accused of moneylaundering. A Vatican monsignor was charged with money smuggling, and the Pope created a commission to investigate his own scandal- ridden institution. The report showed that in 2012, the bank more than quadrupled its profits. The increase was due to the Church's favorable trading and fixed income securities and higher bond values. Despite the Vatican's insistence that the IOR is special, the report shows that it functions much like any other traditional bank. In the past year the bank offered asset management services to about 20, 000 clients, earning over 12 million euros in fees and commissions, and 26 million euros from loans. The Catholic church also has 41 million euros in gold, metals, and precious coins on its balance sheet. The report was dotted with words like reform, and new direction, that hint at a new era for the Vatican. But in the same week of the report's release a Reuters investigation suggested that the bank might have to close some foreign embassy's accounts after revelations of alleged money laundering from Iran, Iraq, and Indonesia. So the Vatican's report is illuminating, to a certain extent, but the bank has a long way to go before convincing both the authorities and the public of their financial transparency.
