Kennedy, visited Berlin. >> The U. S. Embassy in West Germany believed that it would be important for Reagan to go to Berlin to show American solidarity. >> Well, since then, two other Presidents have come, each in his turn to Berlin, and today I myself make my second visit to your city. >> John Kennedy, of course said, 'I am a Berliner', and it was enough in 1963, under those circumstances, the height of the cold war, to signify American solidarity. >> But, I must confess we are drawn here by other things as well, by the feeling of history in this city. >> Reagan's advisers did not have high hopes. They didn't actually think that this was gonna be a particularly significant moment that people were gonna remember forever. I think, there was a sense that Reagan, was just trying to get his political feet back after the Iran- Contra scandal, and so the expectations were actually fairly low. >> If you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization, come here to this gate. Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate. >> Reagan's speechwriters had inserted into the speech this sort of challenge to Gorbachev, that they knew if Reagan said it, would really resonate, and I think Reagan recognized that too, because it was the one part of the speech that he actually told the speechwriters and the members of his staff that he wanted to say, no matter what. >> He did believe in good and evil. He did believe that God had a purpose for him. That was part of his world view, and people sensed that from him. That he was not scared to say, the Soviet system is bad and wrong and should be destroyed. The same way he was not scared to say, Mr. Gorbachev, 'Tear Down This Wall'. He was not being diplomatic. The diplomats at that time were having a heart attack that he was going to say this. This isn't the way people are supposed to talk. >> Mr. Gorbachev, " Tear Down This Wall ". >> Could anyone, other than Ronald Reagan, in effect, say, 'Tear Down This Wall'? Probably not. >> The reason why 'Tear Down This Wall' was so effective is because it was a simple idea, it was simply expressed, but it was also something that Reagan truly believed. >> I understand the fear of war and the pain of division that afflict this continent. >> Reagan, believed what he said. He believed that the Soviet Union was not only an evil empire, but was an aberration of history. >> Yes, across Europe this wall will fall, for it cannot withstand faith, it cannot withstand the truth. The wall cannot withstand freedom. >> But, I think, it was one of the things that people responded to when you could argue that history responded to in Reagan, and, you know, perhaps under different circumstances and in a different time it would have been a very dangerous attitude to have in the Oval Office, for his time and what he was up against. We ended up seeing that wall come down. At the time that he was saying that, that was almost unthinkable. >> I have read and I have been questioned since I've been here about certain demonstrations against my coming, and I would like to say just one thing, and to those who demonstrate so.
