## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] While their jingle, I don't wanna grow up, I'm a Toys R Us kid maybe lodged In the brains of millions, the once popular retailer is no more. After 70 years, Toys R Us closes its doors on Friday, June 29th. The megastore that once was the arbitrator of toy trends announced on March 15th it would be shutting down operations in the U. S. and Puerto Rico. Liquidation sales began on March 23rd with some stores offering 90 % discounts. At the same time of the announcement Toys R Us had 735 locations in the U. S. Unemployed 30, 000 Americans. But how did it get here? Pre- internet age Toys R Us stood on rival in the toy market but the 70 year old retailer met its end thanks to the Amazon internet error and [ UNKNOWN ] decision.

In September 2017, The company's $ 5 billion company debt from a 2005 buy out consumed the chain, and it filed for bankruptcy. At he time, it did receive a $ 3 billion loan to help turn its business around, but it wasn't enough to position Toys R Us competitively against the existing retail store Space. When it comes to toys brand loyalty is to the manufacturer not the retailer so if you're buying the latest Barbie it doesn't matter who you buy it from, just that it's convenient. That makes an intensely competitive market and Toys 'R' Us was priced out especially after the stress of existing debt.

As a result, the company Couldn't invest in customer experiences to keep Jeffrey the giraffe relevant. And while Americans won't be hearing the twizzerers jungle anytime soon, the megastore received bids of more than $ 1 billion for its Asia in April. Toy sales are projected to grow five times faster in Asia than in North American in the next three years. Meanwhile this bankruptcy does not mark the end of the American retail experience. Internet giant Amazon was reportedly interested in buying some of Toys R Us's empty storefronts. For now, Toys R Us's bankruptcy ushers in a storied close to a childhood rite of passage for many Americans.

We'll miss you Jeffery.
