Dubbed the most powerful drug trafficker in the world and eluding arrest for more than a decade, police finally got the man known as El Chapo into a police helicopter. >> Authorities realized many members of the cartel were in the Guzman family. After analyzing messages sent back and forth, they found some so personal that they could only be from Guzman himself they say. >> Police say U. S. and Mexican forces found Joaquin Guzman inside this condo in Mazatlan. As the man at the very top of the Sinaloa Drug Cartel, police say he was responsible for a quarter of drugs answering U. S. through Mexico. You'll notice all police surrounding Guzman wore a mask to protect their identities. The drug wars raging in Mexico since 2006 have killed an estimated 70, 000 people. Guzman is known for his evasiveness. Just last week, police raided one of his compounds while Guzman was still inside. The drug lord fled through a secret door beneath a bathtub. Mexican attorney general released this video over the weekend of what police say are the sewers connecting Guzman's safe houses, which he used as an escape route in the first raid. CNN reports the biggest break in the manhunt for Guzman came in November when police arrested the son of his closest lieutenant. His arrest and each one that followed in the coming months gave police a new cellphone with new info they tapped into. An ex- senior official with the DEA who was briefed on the operations told the New York Daily News he got tired of living up in the mountains and not being able to enjoy the comforts of his wealth. He became complacent and started coming into the City of Culiacan in Mazatlan. That was a fatal error. The elation at taking down what police consider a huge target is still tempered. Guzman has escaped prison before. He still holds powerful allies and he leaves behind a power vacuum someone will likely fill. >> But no one expects this to stop the flow of drugs or blood.
