## Transcript

Do you, Penny, take Leonard to be your lawfully wedded husband? Penny an Leonard from the Big Bang Theory are getting married, and we are giving them some financial lessons. One of the first things that they should do is really go over their finances, see how much they are contributing to 401k's, IRA's, make sure they budget out their spending, and so that they're able to save about 6 months worth of Expenses into an emergency savings account. Another important step is to think about the future. How many kids do they want? What type of house do they want to buy? And really plot out the steps they need to get there.

Starting a conversation about your finances as a couple is a very difficult and not particularly pleasant experience. Make it fun. You know, just have a glass of wine. Make a game out of it. Go in separate rooms and write down how much you think you guys are spending on the groceries, on your car payment, on your insurance, on all the different line items of your budget. Go into it with the right perspective and just have no judgement. You know that it occurs to me, you could solve all of your problems by obtaining more money. If they are dependant on the other person's salary to make their lives livable, to be able to afford their life, they should get a term life insurance policy that will allow them to cover burial costs, rent, or their mortgage in the years to come in case that salary is no longer there.

On the show Penny got a huge raise. I wish they were writing my life. Why do you think you'd make a good pharmaceutical sales rep? I convinced a lot of very large customers who should not be eating cheesecake to have more cheesecake. With this huge raise going from somewhere about 20 grand to somewhere around 100 grand, she should Think about her long term goals. She should think about starting an emergency savings fund that's anywhere from six months to a year worth of expenses. She should also contribute to a retirement account. These are all things that she can now consider now that she has a little bit more flexibility with her new job.
