A mass knife attack in a train station in Southern China this weekend killed at least 33 people including 4 assailants and injured 143 others. The government has blamed Western China's Muslim separatists for the attack. These separatists hail from China's autonomous region of Xinjiang, also known as East Turkestan. Its home to a Turkish speaking people called the Uighurs. Ethnic riots between Uighurs and the region's Han majority peaked in 2009, killing an estimated 200 people. In 2013, more than 100 people died as a result of renewed violence that includes the suicide car crash in Beijing's symbolic Tiananmen Square that killed 5 in October. If Uighur separatists were behind these latest attacks, analysts say that it would suggest the ethnic violence is spreading outside of Xinjiang. As an expert from Pomona College told the Los Angeles Times, it shows that Uighurs are like Chechens in Russia, expressing their discontent throughout the country, not just whether you're based. That discontent is in reference to the heavy handed response China's taken to quell the violence. Opposing policy seen as discriminatory by Uighurs. In recent years, Chinese officials have also begun tying the separatists to international terrorism, a strategy designed, according to the diplomat, to undermine sympathies for separatists among international audiences, which would explain the 9- 11 comparison for this latest attack. Interestingly, as TIME's Hannah Beech notes, the western media outlets for the most part shows not to label the mass murder in Xinjiang terrorism, a decision many in China say downplay what really happens.
