## Transcript

My name is Ayana Elizabeth Johnson. I'm a marine Biologist and conservation strategist and I'm also and an adjunct professor at NYU or I'm teaching earth and ocean conservation. Today we are going to be talking to some of my students and having a discussion about the role of science in society and in policy making. We'll also be taking a field trip to the River Project which is a non- profit that's been operating on Pier 40 in the Hudson River for decades, and helping to connect New Yorker's to the life in the river that flows right past the city. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] When we think about the role of science, sometimes it's not like super glamorous, like I discovered a new species!

I think there's often a misconception that science is all these aha moments Moments, these major discoveries. I often have these conversations, usually over Thanksgiving with my family members who don't come from a science background. Cuz when they think of science, they think of numbers, and graphs, and a lot of terminology. But the best way I can explain it to them is that it's just people that, at the end of the day Mainly just doing a lot of really gross, not every exciting work. There's kinda of disconnecting with scientist in our lab. They're there doing things. They're like they're hands on with it.

I'm like, they're not necessarily like the most like influential people or like most curious matter. I feel like science need like some sort of link There is a way to integrate science more so with social media. And scientists aren't naturally the best communicators. [ LAUGH ] We're really good at writing stuff and taking measurements. But I think the March for Science and the People's Climate March this past year was a really good stepping stone for scientists to be heard. When you started to see data disappearing from government websites That was a real challenge for scientist to step out of their labs.

You need to be like, well we could just ignore that for now. And then like not realize that there's dire consequences that result from that because you can't deny something that's like inherently true. I think people are becoming more interested in science. And when that interest picks up, people realize that you don't necessarily have to have a degree and something in order to understand it. And learn about it on your own. I think everyone has some sort of innate curiosity of you can try testing it yourself. You can go through the New York historical records for example. And you can see pictures of waste literally up on the beach.

Which is I believe the Clean Water Act has started putting in regulations in place, and you can see a clear difference between before and after photos. So actually do your own research, see what you come up with. But more importantly try to open up those dialogues with people. It's easy to do your own research when you come to the realization that everyone is affected by this. We have all of this ability For citizens to participate and help us understand the world better. So, I think science is so cool because you can do it at all this different levels. As a citizen, as a student, as a researcher, as a policy maker, you can use it.

So, hopefully, more people will love science as much as we do, [ LAUGH ] And not ignore it. [ LAUGH ] [ MUSIC ]
