That's according to the European Central Bank which is poised to become the Euro's own single supervisor in November. The bank conducted a stress- test which showed a capital shortfall in 25 of the Euro's own largest banks. 12 have already covered their shortfalls by increasing capital. The test was seen as a prelude to the banks' assumption of authority. The results provide insight as to how European banks may be supervised moving forward. Results are meant to instill confidence in the European banking system by singling out the struggles of individual banks. Things like four in Italy, while also highlighting the successes of others. Interestingly, Germany and Spain are the best performers. And generally the feeling you get from this report is that actually the Spanish overhaul has been quite effective. The results were released Sunday to give investors time to digest the information before markets. Opened on Monday, and the better than expected results had markets reacting well at first. Early gains for the Euro slumped Monday on news a think- tank had been confidence in Germany at a 2 year low. But the Vice President of the European Central Bank is optimistic the test will strengthen the banks, saying in a press release. This should facilitate more lending in Europe, which will help economic growth. The banks that fail the stress test now have two weeks to present a plan to make up their short fall in capital, and nine months to implement those plans.
