Relatives of the deceased have come to claim them. >> My family that existed in my previous life is here. My brother and my mother were exhumed from mass grave and identified. >> Through the years, the remains of more than 6, 500 people killed in the genocide have been exhumed from mass graves and identified in what has been a very slow process. >> I waited 15 years for that to happen. It finally happened now. >> Hasan Nuhanovi? was a U. S. translator during the war. He is one of thousands of people that have come for the 15th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre, the biggest genocide in European soil since World War II. The remains of more than 4, 000 people have been buried here at the Poto? ari Cemetery. Now, 775 more will be given a proper burial as a part of a mass funeral. -[ Foreign Language ] >> For many, the sight of the coffins opens unhealed wounds. >> Coming here to Poto? ari, to Srebrenica, brings up all these memories again. I don't like it at all. I don't like being here. >> On July 11th, 1995, Bosnian Serbs led by General Ratko Mladic invaded the town of Srebrenica, the eastern part of Bosnia. Over the next few days, they systematically executed more than 8, 000 Muslims as part of an ethnic cleansing campaign. Many villagers fled to the U. N. base in Srebrenica guarded by Dutch peacekeepers. Jerry Kramer was there. >> I was here in 1995 as a surgeon for Dutchbat for the Dutch army. I know that we didn't have the capacity to fight and the main importance of being here was to see that there were no attacks. >> Dutch soldiers loaded people onto buses to send them to refugee camps. They allowed the Serbs to separate the men and boys from the women. Flaming, they were unaware of what the Serbs were doing, which was taking the men and boys to execution sites. Heavily outnumbered, the Dutch also complied with the Serb army's order to expel thousands of refugees from the base, leaving them without protection. Many Bosnian Muslims still blamed the Dutch for failing to prevent the atrocity. >> My family was delivered to the Serbs, to their ends in front of my eyes by that soldiers, and they decided to allow me to stay here on the base, which was the only safe place in the whole area because I was a UN employee. That's why-- that's why I survived. We go for air strikes and help and the whole world was looking at the other side and didn't hear anything and didn't say anything. We were left alone. That was it. That was the story. We were chained. We were traded. -[ Foreign Language ] >> I'm here to give my respect to the population of this country, to offer my feelings, and to take part of their regret and their sadness and their tragedy and their grief. >> For the survivors of the massacre, the grieving process has been long and deep. But this burial offers the only source of closure. >> There will be three tombstones-- my father, my mother and my brother next to each other, and I will be able to go there and pray whenever I feel like it. This here is in my memory. I think about it every day.
