Police in Mumbai, India have taken action to help keep tourists safe after an eighteen year old girl drowned in the sea while trying to take a selfie. A man trying to save the girl also drowned. Police have identified at least fifteen no selfie zones across the city and to no surprise they include popular tourists spot like Marine Drive and Chowpatty Beach. A police spokesman told the BBC the designated no selfie sites are the most risky. And said they could deploy lifeguards and put up warning signs to help keep people safe. Indian authorities have tried warning signs before. They were posted during a Hindu festival over fears that people stopping to take selfies could cause stampedes.

This latest move by Mumbai police follows a pattern of tourist sites and theme parks around the world cracking down on selfies and, in some cases, how people can take them. According to Conde Nast Traveler, Mecca Saudi Arabia and Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada have banned selfies. Other tourist destinations like the Palace Museum in Beijing and Disney theme parks have banned selfie sticks. Mumbai police have said that they'll patrol the designated areas and warn tourists about taking selfies. But according to Indie TV, selfie taking tourists in Mumbai won't be fined.
