By all accounts, formal Army Chief Abdel Fattah al- Sisi is expected to easily defeat his sole challenger Hamdeen Sabbahy in the country's presidential elections. It was never a question if al- Sisi would win but by how much. Low voter turn out would undermine his credibility but high turnout would allow him to claim a broad popular mandate. Al- Sisi will be tasked with running a country that's been in turmoil since the 2011 revolution that removed longtime autocrat Hosni Mubarak from power. The election comes less than a year after al- Sisi presided over the toppling of Egypt's first democratically elected president, Mohammad Morsi. This, after mass protests against Morsi and his Muslim brotherhood led government. It was al- Sisi's role in the uprising that launched him into the national spotlight. To his supporters, al- Sisi is a national hero who can bring back stability and revive Egypt's faltering economy. But his critics say the ex- army chief represents a return to the security state, pointing to the military backed interim government's brutal crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood. Since Morsi's removal, Egypt has branded the Brotherhood a terrorist organization, detained thousands of members and sentenced more than 1, 000 to death. The cofounder of the independent Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedom told Time, that's just the prelude. If an interim government is capable of doing this, imagine what an elected government can do. For his part, al- Sisi recently vowed there would be no Muslim Brotherhood under his rule.
