## Transcript

I mean, the truth is there have been so many moments over the last couple of years where I've been like, pinch me, I have to be dreaming. Everything has happened for me in the backwards order of what I thought it would have. I feel like Shang-Chi is such a monumental film for so many reasons, you know, representing a community that hasn't traditionally felt seen and felt visible. Thank you. Thank you. I think for a lot of diasporic Asians, the last two years, has really pulled back the curtain on how we're really seen in Western society. When my parents immigrated over, I think there were sold on this premise that we would be treated as equals.

And if you worked hard, you know, every opportunity would be available to you, the quintessential American Dream. Growing up, I felt like there were always little things that were reminding me that it was not the case. Part of why movies like Shang-Chi are important, Crazy Rich Asians, The Farewell and Menari is that they really normalize the diasporic Asian existence. It's very exciting to be in this industry, where we get to tell stories and we get to craft culture, you know, hopefully, we get to shed a light on these stories for the first time. So I wrote a book called We Were Dreamers, and immigrant superhero origin story.

It tells the story of my my family's journey from from China to Canada. And then ultimately, my journey growing up in Canada, trying to follow one kind of prescribed idea of success set out for me by my parents, but then ultimately having that kind of crash and burn, hitting rock bottom, and then making the decision to find my own path, and to define my own success. And, of course, that journey is what led me to Hollywood. It's time to show them who I really am. You know, one very, very famous person at Marvel, once upon a time said that with great power comes great responsibility. And I think, I think that's just it, you know, it's the realization that I'm no longer, you know, a scrappy actor in Toronto trying to get his next gig, you know, now, I'm, you know, a public figure, and that comes with its responsibilities and also comes with with choice, right?

Like, do I choose to shy away from my platform? Or do I choose to embrace it and to use it to talk about issues that are pertinent to me and that I believe are pertinent to others? You know, I'd definitely like to build out a production company, want to make sure that, you know, the next time a pandemic happens that Asian-Americans, Asian-Canadians aren't so easily thrown under the bus, we have the ability to kind of hold our heads high, and to feel represented and seen rather than to have that narrative taken away from us.
