## Transcript

>> When Brian Newman hears explosions in the mountainous region of Indian- controlled Kashmir, he isn't afraid. As director of the Kashmir Ski Patrol in Gulmarg, Brian is building an unlikely partnership between the Indian army and local ski patrol to trigger controlled avalanches.

>> At this point, the relationship between the Gulmarg Ski Patrol and the operation of the Gulmarg Ski Resort is utterly dependent on the relationship with the Indian army.

>> Kashmir remains the most militarized region in the world and Gulmarg is the training ground for over 10, 000 Indian soldiers. In recent years, [ unk ] pieces returned. Tours into Gulmarg is up tenfold. Locals like Yaseen Khan have been catering to tourists for more than 40 years. He started one of the first ski shops here and is happy to see tourists come back.

>> It was my dream. If I'm going to die, okay. But first I want to see the tourism on again here. This is my big dream. So, now, I am day by day, day by day more happy because tourism is on now again.

>> While the boom in tourism is great for the resort, young Kashmiris like Yaseen's son Arif, are taking the opportunity to make it on the world stage as a professional Alpine racer.

>> It's been five years I've been skiing around the world and like every year, going three or four countries, maybe five, skiing and that's how I do every year.

>> Arif believes Gulmarg could be one of the world's best ski resorts.

>> Kashmir is really a good place and like it's really a lot of potential. What I found here is it's world's-- it can be world's best ski resort.

>> It's a unique place compared to anywhere else that I've heard of or I've been to.

>> Experienced skiers like American Matt Rome know that the real danger is not the armed Indian soldiers that patrol the region but getting injured in the hundreds of miles of back country that is not governed by the ski patrol.

>> The State Department does advise that we, as Americans, do not travel here. I've never had any problem here and I don't think it's anymore dangerous than anywhere in the states except for the additional complications for medical evacuation and hospitalization.

>> That's where Brian Newman comes in. His work is critical for the safety of tourists in Gulmarg. This winter, 17 Indian soldiers were killed in a massive avalanche that hit the resort. Brian started with very little infrastructure but says he's made tremendous progress.

>> In 2008, my best impression of the way Gulmarg was operating and all of its infrastructure was perhaps 40 years behind Western standards.

>> To further improve safety on the mountain, Brian now teaches the ski patrol about snow science so they can make accurate weather predictions.

>> My hope is, is sometime in the future we're able to conclude that training and see them as a self- sufficient ski patrol managing their own ski resort here in Gulmarg.

>> Back on the slopes, Arif is working towards his own victory. To his success, he's paving a way for the next generation of Kashmiri skiers.

>> Well, they've got really good potential back in their selves. They're really strong, they have focus, every time focusing, they're really like struggling for skiing ski racing and I hope while we get some more organized and more infrastructure here, they're gonna be the top skiers in the world.

>> In the future, that dream may include a gold medal at the Olympics. But for now, tourists from around the world are enjoying fantastic skiing in the Himalaya. For TIME. com, this is Rebecca Byerly, an Indian- controlled Kashmir.
