## Transcript

Well, hi there. I'm Doug Aamoth, Time Tech Editor, and in lieu of making any New Year's resolutions for myself, here's some things that you need to work on when using Twitter. Take it from me, a guy with over 4, 000 Twitter followers. That's not a lot? Well how many does Bieber have? 32 million? Are you serious? [ NOISE ] Okay, well take it from me, a guy of no consequence on Twitter. [ MUSIC ] Lets all cool it with the hashtags. Yes, they're useful for organizing certain tweets. But think of hashtags as the jazz hands of Twitter. Every time you hashtag a certain word, you're using jazz hands.

Let's look at a sample tweet. Your New Year's resolutions for using Twitter. [ MUSIC ] At the very most, jazz hands, the word resolutions and Twitter, otherwise this is how you sound. Your new. Years. Resolutions. For using Twitter. Time. Video. Social. Tech. Funny. Not funny. Big head. Time. Lame. Jazz hands. That's, that what it, that's all I read when I see all those. Hashtag Jazz hands. At the very most, two hashtags per tweet. Preferably zero, enough. [ MUSIC ] Retweets do not equal endorsements. Or something like that. Friends in the media, I'm looking at you for this one, and I'm basically alienating myself from everyone I work with at Time, more so than I already have.

If you have anything in your Twitter bio, that even remotely resembles a following, get rid of it. Retweets do not equal endorsements. Opinions are my own. Tweets are my own. Opinions do not equal endorsements. I don't know how this all started, but I picture some journalism professor saying, well you should put your bio that retweets do not equal endorsements. Look at my beard, I am wearing a sweater vest. I have crumbs in my beard, and now their in my sweater vest. Dude, I am going to have office hours at four o'clock, if anyone has any questions about retweets not equaling endorsements. Don't, don't retweet us something about communism, because then everyone will think that you endorse communism.

But say that your opinions are your own, because you don't want people thinking your boss is telling you what to tweet. But remember to say retweets don't equal endorsements, so your boss doesn't get mad at you for endorsing communism. It's just. We're, we're human. We have opinions, and we retweet stuff whether we endorse it or not. Unless you have 32 million Twitter followers, I wouldn't worry about it. I cannot believe, he has 32 million Twitter followers. That is crazy. [ MUSIC ] Moving on to the lightning round. I spent way too much time impersonating the hilarious professor, so here we go.

Follow Friday. Can it. We all know how to find people on Twitter. Why, just tell people to follow people every day if you're gonna do that, why wait until Friday? Just do it. Multi tweets, tweets. I have something very important to say so get ready. One of three, I'm sick and tired of people leaving long strings of rambling thoughts in multiple tweets two or three. If you can't fit it all in one tweet, start a blog. Retweeting something, and changing the wording of the original tweet, but still calling it a retweet. Example, I tweet, I would really like to know how Justin Bieber got 32 million followers.

You add caller commentary and butcher my tweet. Yeah Justin Beiber is the best Belibe Belieber retweet deon, I really like Justin Beiber jazz hands. I didn't say that! MT, modify tweet. Just, that's like a basic. Nothing against Bieber, I mean, 32 million. He's good. Aside from that, no one has anything to work on. As far as I'm concerned, in 2013. Let's just work on the handful of Twitter stuff and call it a day. Yeah, I, every year I make the same resolution. Keep being awesome, and one of these years it's gonna, actually happen. I keep sliding back. I peaked in high school basically. And then I've been, yeah, so.

Yeah my fans are like the non believers. Like they don't believe in me. But less and less each year. So, 2013, could be.
