## Transcript

This was the scene Friday night in New Maadi, a Cairo suburb. People here have been chanting and cheering since just after Egyptian vice president Omar Suleiman made a brief announcement on television during evening prayers. He announced that Hosni Mubarak had stepped down as president after 30 years ceding control of the country to a council of military leaders. Much of the action on television was focused on downtown Cairo in Tahrir Square at the presidential palace in a neighborhood called Heliopolis as well as in Alexandria. But scenes like this one played out in neighborhoods across the country.
