I'm actually wearing a high- performance mouthguard. A few weeks ago, I went to a dentist to get fitted for it. Professional athletes say these mouthguards can increase their strength and flexibility but the communist that sell these mouth pieces said that even average Joe's like me will see a boost in their performance. >> Okay, are you ready? >> Uh- huh. >> It's these wedges, these yellow pads that you see that kind of repositions demandable into a more optimum position. It is based on a theory than when we clench our teeth in a stressful situation, our bodies release a hormone called cortisol, which some believe can impair our ability to perform under that stress. >> Excess of amount of cortisol in men reduced testosterone. It could increase anxiety. It could increase blood pressure. >> Dr. Hypett says refitting your bite will reduce the release of cortisol and allow even journalists like me to perform better under stress. >> This is the people like clenched teeth during the day that clenched teeth at night that want to enhance their performance in golf, tennis, all the non- contact sports. >> Sporing apparel manufacture Under Armor has teamed up with Bite Tech to create a product on being fitted for, which retails for $ 495. They have also designed the mouthguard for professional athletes and they're currently marketing it with a sleek [ unk ] and an official endorsement from top golfer Hunter Mahan, even though he's never actually worn it in competition. A similar product is being sold by Canadian firm Makkar Athletics Group as endorsed by Terrell Owens, who in this video shows how the mouthguard gives him that extra inch of flexibility in his neck. Although look at that extra jaw movement at the end. Is Owens trying harder with the mouth piece in? >> Head down here. Feet down here please-- >> To be sure, I had Mike Dixie from Ortho- Rehab Specialist perform some of the same tests on me with my mouthguard. >> Stay nice and relax for me and we'll bring you down. This is where you stop, okay? >> With my mouthguard in, my arm move significantly lower. >> Now, you become a lot more symmetrical. >> Yeah. >> Significant change. >> We also do the strike test with and without the mouth piece. >> The mouth piece is now out. This is my normal human strength not in mouth piece and hand strength. >> Go ahead and push out into it. Push, one, two, three, four and relax. Okay, so we got 20. 3. >> Okay. >> All right? >> I'm putting the mouth piece in. >> Caution. One, two, three, four-- 21 .-- you might not think, " Wow, that's-- you know 0. 9 pound is not all that much but when you're dealing with only 20 pounds a force, that's a pretty significant change. >> But I needed some more quantitative results to come to any sort of conclusion. So I put it through a number of my own tests. On a stationary bike in my basement, I pedaled 6. 6 miles in 30 minutes, typically, I do 6. 3 but I didn't beat my personal best of 7. In Scrabble, I scored a solid 300. My wife beat me with 318. And finally, I put it to the ultimate test-- this pacman. I wasn't able to beat my all- time top score of 152, 580. But after a few tries, my best was 123, 250. After that, then this pacman seemed to get tired and was caught by a ghost. Perhaps, she could have used the mouth piece.
