Doug Weir is on a mission that's taking him from New York City to an airport near Pittsburgh. He's saving this dog's life. Charlie was going to be euthanized in a shelter until a pet rescue group and Pilots and Paws stepped in. Pilots N Paws is a group of pilots that volunteer their time and their aeroplanes to help animals and rescue dogs, cats, even reptiles that get transported from locations where they are to hopefully adoptive families. This is the first of three flights taking charly from New York to Chicago. If the entire trip was by car, it might take 12 hours and a relay of six drivers. But by plane, three pilots can complete the trip in half the time. [ INAUDIBLE ] That means less stress on the animals, and fewer people who need to coordinate schedules. Okay, 4500 for now. [ INAUDIBLE ] Doug Weir, a corporate banker makes about half a dozen rescue flights each year. And each one costs him about $ 500 in fuel. Hey, Joe how are you doing there buddy? You a good boy? [ SOUND ] Charlie's a pitbull, a breed notorious for being trained to fight. He was used to train fighting dogs to be aggressive, so that he would be the one that they would have a chance to practice on, to beat up on, to, to hurt. He was pulled from a New York fight ring during a raid by police. Before he suffered any serious injuries. A pet rescue group in Chicago decided to take Charlie in and posted a request the pilots [ INAUDIBLE ] website. Hi Charlie. Hello. Doug signed on for the first of three legs to Chicago. Come on. Which meant being the first pilot to greet Charlie. Come on. Up here. Good boy. It's an encounter. That did not get off on the right foot. They told me that they had walked him this morning, at least I, that was my understanding, so I thought he would be in pretty good shape for the ride. What do you think is this a little bit more than you bargained For? [ LAUGH ] So far, but you know, I guess you just gotta take it with in stride, it's a dog, so. It's a two hour flight. At 6500 feet, to western Pennsylvania. [ SOUND ] [ INAUDIBLE ] These flights. We've combined two things we really love. One is flying. And the other is helping these animals in need. [ INAUDIBLE ] these animals wouldn't have any other option other than they would be put down. And by flying these animals to new homes they really have a new life. There he goes. Good boy.
