But this is what they look like when there is a hartal. On Monday, Bangladesh's main opposition party called for a hartal or a general strike to be held by its supporters across the nation. Businesses shut down and police came out as demonstrators aired their grievances against the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. >> Hartal. Hartal. Hartal. >> There were a few heated moments. The eve of the protest, several buses were set on fire in Dhaka, and a bomb went of on the campus of Dhaka University, injuring two students. >> We are talking about public demands. We are, you know, the price of rice right now is very high and people cannot afford. There's no light in-- no light in the [ unk ]. You know, gas prices and-- gas prices and many, many prices. So, as a political party-- the [ unk ] political party, we are just expressing the demands of the people. And government are freezing us. After all, you see the situation. We cannot make any position. We cannot-- we cannot speak. We cannot speak. >> Like in many parts of the world, food prices are on the rise in Bangladesh. In December, food prices in rural areas were up nearly 12 percent. In Dhaka's largest rice market, this rice seller says he's never seen rice prices as high as they are today. But he doesn't blame the government. He blames big rice traders, who he says are hoarding rice supplies to push prices up. -[ Foreign language ] >> Though hartals are relatively common, they're not all that popular. Many people in Dhaka oppose them. Near the university, a group of students has gathered to protest the protest and show their support to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Their leaders say her opposition called the hartal not to help people but for their own political purposes, and that the strike is bad for the economy. This rickshaw driver, waiting for a fare outside the government party headquarters agrees. -[ Foreign language ] >> He says that yesterday, when there was no hartal, he earned $ 18.
