And there are endless stories about people arriving, seeing the statue, having to go through the process and get [ to ] Ellis Island. And then go on to go somewhere in America and to make a new life. [ MUSIC ] [ MUSIC ] In the 1980s, as we were doing the restoration, it was determined that the torch was beyond repair. It was taken down on July 4th, 1984. And in the process, it was determined that we would build a new torch. So the torch that is there now. Is a copy of the torch that was there when the Statue of Liberty was first put in place. And the original torch has rested since 1986 inside the entranceway to the Statue of Liberty. [ MUSIC ] Access inside the statue Has been limited. About 18 % of the visitors can go inside of the statue, so there was always a desire to build a free- standing museum experience for every visitor that comes out to Liberty Island. [ MUSIC ] Taking donw this 130- year- old torch in pieces And bringing it over and transporting it, it was quite a bit more delicate than we expected. It's like a huge Tiffany lamp. I speak with all the workers, pump them up to be proud to be working out here, because their work is going to be Looked at by millions of people every year for the next 120 years. [ MUSIC ] This really feels like an important moment in history. And it's an important chapter in the statue's story. The Statue of Liberty Museum will tell the statue's story, And it will be available and open to everyone.
