## Transcript

>> It's easy to take walking for granted. After all, it's simply a way to get from point A to point B. But it turns out that walking can be a powerful medical tool, serving as an indicator for how healthy you are, and even how long you might live.

>> I've walked forever. I don't own a car, I never learned to drive. And next week, I'll be 94.

>> Researchers report that how quickly an older adult walks may be a good predictor of their longevity. In a new study, men and women over age 65 who walked at a brisk pace improve their chances of surviving for another 10 years by more than 90 percent, while those who walked with a slower gait improve their odds of living for another decade by 30 to 50 percent. All of this comes as no surprise to a group of avid walkers at Ravenswood Senior Center in Queens, New York.

>> You go, go, guys.

>> These walkers were putting in their paces even on a cold January day.

>> I'm trying to encourage them that that's what they need-- to walk. It doesn't have to go fast, just take your time and walk.

>> Last year, the walking club was recognized by the city's Department of Aging for logging 102, 778 steps.

>> What I usually do, I walk 6, 7 miles a day. Like if I don't walk for about a month, I start getting like pains and things like that. But once I walk, I'm good.

>> And that makes sense. Walking involves a range of body systems-- from the network of bones, muscles, and joints that keep us moving, to the heart, lungs, and brain, as well. As encouraging as the results are, however, they don't mean that walking faster will necessarily add years to your life.

>> What we're saying is that people whose natural self- selected walking speed is more rapid, live longer. And what that says to us is that that's a reflection of how their bodies work, how many of the organ systems that are important for health impact on something that requires so many parts to work right.

>> Studenski is hoping that the study will encourage both doctors and older individuals to start paying more attention to something they're taking for granted.
