A historic decision out of Seattle Monday on the issue of minimum wage. The City Council unanimously passed legislation to make the minimum wage $ 15 an hour. That is the highest in all of the United States. It's a, an exciting moment for Seattle, for the state, and I think for the nation. We're about to turn back 34 years of failed, economic policies that have decimated the middle class in this nation. According to USA Today, the plan which goes into effect next year will phase in gradually with larger businesses having three years to get wages to $ 15 an hour. Smaller businesses with less than 500 employees will have seven years to make the change.

It will mean that I can actually like get basic things like new clothing, necessities. It means that I'll be able to save money. But opponents make the same argument used in the broader national minimum wage debate, saying it will leat to layoffs and higher prices for customers. The International Franchise Association President and CEO, told KIRO the organization is planning on filing a lawsuit to block the unfair and discriminatory Seattle minimum wage plan. It picks winners and losers, and it flies in the face of common sense. The issue of minimum wage returned to the spotlight last year when fast food workers across the country began protesting for higher wages.

Then President Obama used an executive order in February to raise the minimum wage for federal contract workers to $ 10. 10 an hour and urged Congress to do the same for the rest of the country. But will Seattle's big decision set an example for the rest of the country? If recent moves by other states are any indication it very well could. Earlier this year Minnesota raised its guaranteed wage to $ 9. 50 an hour by 2016. California, Connecticut, and Maryland have also passed legislation to increase their minimum wages to 10 dollars or more in the next few years. The current minimum wage in Washington State is $ 9.
