## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] I first learned how to cook when I was seven years old. My father would drag me at six in the morning, really early, to the farmer's market. And you know the passion for cooking as never left me. [ MUSIC ] I'm Nona Lim and I'm the founder of my company Nona Lim, and we make really great and healthy broths, noodles, and soups. We care a lot about how we make our products. [ MUSIC ] What we don't put into our products, is as important as what we put into it. We use mostly fresh vegetables, fresh spices and herbs. You know, we can see the fresh vegetables Coming in from a produce company.

I can see how they're making it, how they're packing it, to make sure that we maintain the quality that we believe in, so that when you, you know, pick up a bowl of soup and you're eating it, it feels like you've just made it in your kitchen or that your mom has just made it. And that's pretty much the philosophy about how we make our product. Prior to starting my own business I was actually a management consultant and then a software consultant. I decided that I wanted to start something brand new and I wanted to pursue So the passion or my passion in food I've always had as a child. I thought to myself, I can give it a go.

If it doesn't work, I can always go back and get a job. But at least I would have given it a try. When I first started the business, it was definitely done on a shoestring budget so we really bootstrapped it and my husband and I invested money into the business. My husband had a full time job, so he was helping to Subsidize our household bills and operating expenses. I remember our apartment was burgled. And they took the engagement ring among a number of different things. Thankfully we had renter's insurance, which Paid us back, so it's still getting replaced [ UNKNOWN ]. I took that check and cashed it, I put that into the business.

And in 2012, I was able to get a local producer loan from Whole FOods, and that little loan... Really helped me in getting some equipment I needed to make a soup in a kitchen. Then from there two years later, they continued to help support to the business and now we're national with Whole Foods. I think a piece of advice I would give to anyone thinking about starting their own business [ MUSIC ] is to really be ready to go in for the long haul, so you have to be prepared for that. Both mentally and financially and physically. [ MUSIC ]
