## Transcript

It's the staple of the American dream. Buying a house. And according to real estate company, Zillow, this might be the best time to buy and the worst time to rent. According to Zillow college kids, newlyweds, and all other renters around the country paid a grand total of $ 441 billion for rent in 2014. Up four point nine percent from the year before. Obviously certain cities and states are feeling the rising costs more than others. We're looking at you, New York City. The brave men and women renting in the big apple are shouldering more than ten percent of that national total. Though New York also had the largest number of renters in 2014 at 3.

3 million. But for all that demand and an ever behind supply of places to live you might be surprised New York City didn't top the list as most expensive rent in the country. The area ranked sixth at $ 1, 228 a month. San Francisco wasn't on top either, though it was close at second with one thousand five hundred and ninety eight dollars a month. Number one was the other silicon valley boosted city, San Jose. Zillow says monthly rent averaged one thousand eight hundred and seven dollars a month in 2014. Now consider the census bureau's median household income for those three cities respectively.

New Yorker's spent 22. 4 % of their income to rent. San Franciscans 24. 1 percent. And people renting in San Jose spent more than a fourth of their income, 26. 5 percent, on temporary housing. Just don't tell all these stats to Zillow commenters. Yes, guys, all of these are just averages and many rents are much higher, especially in Manhattan.
