## Transcript

You know, on last year's road trip, I spent a lot of time up in the [ INAUDIBLE ]. Hearing some really hard news stories. And I wanted to mix it up a little bit this year. Now, Austin's the kinda of city where young people, with fresh ideas tend to congregate, and they're beginning to have a real tech start up culture here. So today, I, I took a tour of some of the start up companies in the area and found some really amazing young people doing some pretty optimistic things. You were starting, starting stuff when you were in college? Yeah, so I started my 1st company and we were a true dorm room dotcom and [ INAUDIBLE ] .

There are lots of great places to start a company, but one of the reasons why Austin is one of the best places to start a company, is because it's such a vibrant online community. There're people here that are early adopters. They're one of the most quick to use tools like new things that come out. And so if you're launching a new product, it's easy to find people to try it out and to give you feedback. We moved into this place during South by Southwest but the. So, in the spring. Yeah, in the spring. And we've already outgrown it. You, you've already outgrown it? Yeah. Yeah I mean, you'll we're, we're packed to the gills.

Austin, has always been one of the more interesting places in this country. It's smack dab in the middle of Texas. It's where the Texas government, but more importantly, it's where the University of Texas is. And it's always been a scene for academic experimentation, but also for great food and great music and great prices, things cost less here in Austin then they do in LA and San Francisco and what I was hearing today from some of the start up people was they had had come from places like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York Falling in love with Austin. She brought me down here, I fell in love.

I said I can't go back. It's one of my favorite places. It's such a great town. Because, the weather's pretty good. The prices are very good, and there's real culture here. There's real interesting stuff going on. I'm, What was your name? Joe Klein. Joe. The most impressive thing I saw today were these 224 year old kids from UCLA. One of them was an art major, the other one is a biology major that have started this website called SpareFoot which is like hotels. com for storage. Basically what happened was I, I didn't wanna throw everything away so, I put half of it in Mario's attic, the other 1 / 2 in my girlfriends garage, and had the idea that people could actually rent out the unused space on their personal property.

Like a storage unit to other people. So, today you could call it Arbian beef for storage. So, we started an exchange for people who needed to put their stuff somewhere and and people who had you know, places to put it. Now, they're in their I think third year, they're expanding, they're creating 50 new jobs this year. And it's the kinda of thing that if you replicate it over and over again for different kinds of goods and services, your gonna be able to boost this economy, it was kinda of nice to see something happy and optimistic about our economy for a change.
