## Transcript

Solar powered technology has led to some pretty incredible stuff. Take the Solar Impulse 2, the whirring, zero- fuel aircraft that uses solar cells to collect energy from the sun Powering its flight. Or the fact that solar panels are being used to power hospitals with shoddy electricity in war torn Gaza. But aside from providing energy for huge projects, solar power is also being used for something a little closer to home, literally. The U. S. Department of Energy says solar powered technology is growing in popularity, and getting cheaper by the year, for those looking to install systems at their residence.

David Feldman, Senior Financial Analyst for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory told Money only 1 % of US homes have solar panels, but that number is growing. According to the Solar Energies Association, there were more than 186, 000 solar- related residential installations in 2014, more than 50 % growth over the year before. In addition, new financing options are making it easier for homeowners to also become solar panel owners. One financing option is a solar lease, which requires little to no upfront cost. This way, you pay a monthly fee and still save on electricity costs without having to purchase a system for thousands of dollars.

If you have thousands of dollars to spend on an entire system, the federal solar investment tax credit shoulders some of the financial burden The federal policy gives a 30 % credit to people or companies who purchase solar systems. But there's good news and bad news. First the bad. The 30 % federal tax credit only lasts through the end of 2016. After that, the credit will drop down to 10 %. The good news, tax credit or no tax credit, solar systems will continue to get cheaper. In May the Energy Department announced $ 32 million in funding to go toward boosting the solar energy workforce and, you guessed it, driving down the cost of solar in making the technology more accessible.
