Looking to pump up your credit score? Well I have a quick guide to get you there. I'm Kristen Bellstrom, and your money minute, is starting right now. [ MUSIC ]. The biggest thing you can do is pay your bills on time. To help, set up automatic bill pay, or calendar reminders to alert you when bills are becoming due. Next, looking at a utilization ratio. That's the amount you charge on each credit card versus your total credit limit. You wanna lower this number, to show lenders you don't have a habit of running up big balances. So never charge more than 30 % of what a given card will allow. Paying down your debt is another key.

If your choosing between putting extra cash towards your credit card or student loan debt. Always pick the card, it'll have the biggest impact on your score. The length of your credit history is also important. Unfortunately, money hasn't figured out how to extend your life. We'll get back to you on that, but there is something you can do. Just keep your oldest cards open even if you don't use them and make sure to charge things now and then to show banks you can handle paying it off. It won't happen overnight, but even a 70 point increase is a big deal. On a $ 200, 000 30 year fixed rate mortgage, having a 760 versus a 690 can save you $ 17, 000 over the life of the loan.

And that is 60 seconds well spent. [ MUSIC ].
