How's it going? -[ unk ] -[ unk ] >> How's business in lately? >> Very bad. >> This Cairo's most famous shopping bazaar, the historic Khan el- Khalili. You'll find everything here from the clothes to silverware and, of course, plenty of Egyptian traders. On those days, Fishawy's is one of the oldest and most famous coffee houses in all of Cairo will be packed with tourists and Egyptians. But during Egypt's revolution which filled the streets of protesters elsewhere in town, business here came to a standstill. During the height of Egypt's unrest, I met one of the owners of Fishawy's, Akram Fishawy, who would watch as business permitted. By then, the government said, over 1 million tourists had fled the country. -[ Foreign Language ] >> Of course, everyone ran away. Even Egyptians ran away. What do you think? The tourists wouldn't run? -[ Foreign Language ] >> Unemployment will increase now. Now, I have 20 or 25 employees and work right now doesn't need more than 5. >> For weeks, the world focused on Tahrir Square, the center of the Egyptian revolution. But the neighborhoods beyond it have experienced their own size makeshift. Fishawy's has been around since 1710 and Akram is part of the 7th generation to run the business. Over the centuries, the coffee shop has witnessed history passing the city by as leaders rose and fell and Cairo grew. The same is true for Egypt's revolution this year when the narrow alleys this bizarre played an early role. They're actually clashes in these streets. I was here on January 28th at Al- Azhar Mosque and the clashes broke out following demonstrations and police were firing a teargas and rubber bullets down these ice where we're standing right now. Mohammad Abdul Razek was here as the protest grew and police told him it wasn't safe to keep his tour shop open. -[ Foreign Language ] >> During the protest, tourists started to leave, run off to the other. People started to worry. Shop owners, too. Whoever had [ unk ], they started to store them. It opened for a little while and closed for the rest day. We were just hearing that there were protests here and there. We didn't realize that they were that big. >> At Fishawy's, most of the tables remain empty. But for many, even those in the tourism sector, the protests marked the start of a new Egypt. On the night that President Hosni Mubarak resigned, business momentarily resumed. -[ Foreign Language ] >> When he resigned, people went down to the streets all over the street celebrating, wandering, flags. People came here, had dinner at restaurants, ate kebab and came and had tea. We were happy because we found that the whole country's happy. I'm happy myself. -[ Foreign Language ] >> But overall, business in Khan el- Khalili remains slow. The Egyptian military, now in control of the country, has said it will reform the constitution and hold free elections in the next 6 months. But there's no telling how long it will take to get tourists back in the streets here. Most workers hope that it's only a matter of time. -[ Foreign Language ] >> Day after day, life is getting better whether with the sales rates or the customers. What's coming next gives us hope. -[ Foreign Language ] >> The media will spread the word about tourism and things will come back.
