Armed men dressed as police attacked a Pakistani airport, killing nearly 30 people. Now Pakistani Taliban is claiming responsibility. The militants armed with automatic weapons, a rocket launcher, and a number of grenades stormed the airport, one of the country's most high profile targets, before midnight last night. The raid in one of the airports terminals reportedly lasted about five hours, before airport security and paramilitary forces could stop it early Monday morning. A Taliban spokesman said their aim was to reach the main terminal and hijack aircraft. But the security forces managed to stop them. Ten militants, in all, were reportedly involved in the attack, all of them dying during the violence. Some reportedly were killed when they detonated suicide vests. According to CNN, 18 other people, including eight members of airport security and two airport employees, were also among the dead. The Pakistani Taliban was initially thought to be behind the attack and confirmed those suspicions Monday. As the Guardian reports, a spokesman for the group formerly known as Tehrik- e Taliban Pakistan, said the violence was in response to killing of the groups former leader, Hakimullah Mehsud. Mehsud was killed by a US drone strike along Afghanistan's border in November of 2013. The Taliban and the Pakistani government had been in peace talks as of late, although those talks had reportedly begun to crumble. As New York Times reports, however, a spokesmen for the group says it would like to resuscitate peace talks with the government. Speaking to Time, a Washington- based analyst and senior advisor of the Asia Society says the attack raises concerns about security in the country, showing nowhere is safe. The airport attack shows their depth and networking in Karachi and even penetration in the Karachi airport. They entered from the gate which is used by top government and foreign dignitaries, supposedly the most secure. Elsewhere in Pakistan, suicide bombings targeting buses reportedly killed more than 20 people Sunday. According to Pakistan Today, gunfire was also reported at the scene. No passengers were reportedly killed at the airport. Flights were diverted in response to the attack.
