These men are loyal to Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected President, ousted by the military in July. Morsi himself is facing a slew of criminal charges, including murder and conspiracy to commit treason. In August, his supporters staged sit- ins outside a Cairo mosque, demanding his return to power. Security forces stormed the protest camps, leaving hundreds dead. That prompted riots throughout Southern Egypt. According to Ahram Online, the Egyptian government accused the 529 defendants in Monday's trial of inciting that violence. They were charged with the killing of a police officer, attempted murder of two others, and attacking a police station during the August unrest. Observers say Monday's mass sentencing is the latest in a growing crackdown on Morsi's supporters in the Muslim Brotherhood. As a professor in International Relations at the London School of Economics explained to USA Today, what these trials tell us is that the government has been systematically trying to weaken the Muslim Brotherhood and force them to accept the roadmap set by the military government. Since Morsi's ousting, the interim government has banned Brotherhood activities, frozen its assets, and designated the group a terrorist organization. Thousands of Brotherhood members, including most of its leadership, have been sent to jail. Monday's mass sentencing is part of larger trial that involves more than 1, 200 Morsi supporters. The remaining defendants will stand trial Tuesday for similar charges. Egyptian law requires the country's leading authority of religious law, known as the Grand Mufti, to first ratify the death sentences before they can be carried out. The 529 convicted are expected to appeal the verdict.
