## Transcript

[ MUSIC ] For their tireless acts of courage and mercy. For buying the world time to strengthen its defenses. For the risks they took and the lives they saved, the Ebola fighters are TIME's 2014. Person of the year. [ MUSIC ] This disease came from nature but the crisis was largely man made. There was a window between about March of this year and May. When it's possible it could have been contained. As past Ebola outbreaks have been over the last 40 years, but unfortunately the bureaucracy was snarled. The response was very slow to come. The warnings of first responders were either dismissed or they were told that they were crying wolf and not to incite panic.

And so by the time the international. When he really got his act together, it was too late to keep the disease from spreading throughout the crowded capital cities of West Africa. One of the stories we tell are that of Dr. Jerry Brown, who brought a hospital in Monrovia that opened in early Ebola treatment unit. He has been treating patients every day. Month after month since the outbreak began. We talked to Foday Galla, an ambulance driver who also is a survivor, and whose neighbors call him the miracle man. Who has said he would gladly give his blood to help his country and to help others survive.

We talked to Dr. Kent Brantly. Who was one of the first western doctors to contract Ebola when he was serving in a Monrovia hospital, and was brought back to the United States for treatment and ended up surviving. And to Ella Watson- Stryker, a health promoter for Doctors Without Borders, who went house to house helping to educate families about how Ebola is spread and. And to help communities know how to come back. Their heroism is inspiring. But they are protecting not only those who they are treating in the countries affected. But everyone who will be learning lessons about what needs to be done in the future to strengthen a public health system.

There's nowhere you're strong enough for what could be even more dangerous pandemics in the future. [ MUSIC ]
