More than 36, 000 runners began the 26- mile trek Monday morning toward hallowed ground at the Boston Marathon finish line. [ SOUND ] And they're off. The marathon started during the 9 o'clock hour Eastern time in Hopkinton headed toward Boylston Street in downtown Boston. Among the 36, 000 runners set to run in this marathon, many celebrities have also trained so that they can take part in the historic race. I am so glad it's finally race day. It has been a long couple of months, but I know it's gonna be an incredible event. I can't wait to be a part of it. This is my team now. I mean, I don't play for the Patriots anymore. This is my team, my running team. The things we do. You gotta pick them up, huh? For the American Stroke Association. So I told them, you know, I'll finish with you next year. Also running are the friends and family of many survivors. Heather Abbot, who lost the lower part of her left leg when the second bomb went off, will run the last half mile. I can only imagine that it's going to be very invigorating. She was literally one person over from me. I just wish that it didn't happen. As you might imagine, security this year is as tight as it has ever been with more than 100 new security cameras set up along the racetrack, four helicopters in the sky and more than 3500 police officers, many of whom will be undercover. I have all the confidence in the men and women of our department to make sure this race is gonna go off. It's probably the most secure place to be today in the world. One of the favorites in the elite women's competition, Shalane Flanagan, is a Boston native and served as a rallying point for many fans along the race path. The marathon began Monday morning with a moment of silence for the victims of last year's bombings. Almost a million spectators are expected to line the 26 mile route heading to the finish line, the largest crowd to ever cheer on the runners.
