It's a month- long period where students at Williams College got to just try something new. I proposed the course called Painting and Drawing in Egypt. My goal was not go to Egypt so much to find out about Egypt but to explore their own selves. We were basically clueless. You could be travelling the hostels we were staying and had no television. We didn't know there was protest starting in Cairo. The students got to see a little bit of this beginning before I got them on the plane that night, and I was really glad that the timing worked as it did. I stuck around. I was supposed to stay another couple of weeks to be part of an exhibit. I was so looking forward to doing that, but the turn of events became quite different. But I started to see that the night after the students have left here and see demonstrators coming through the streets. They were chanting a shout, ash- shab yurid isqat an- nizam. The people want their system to collapse. >> Ash- shab yurid isqat an- nizam! Ash- shab yurid-- I was doing watercolor studies and I was looking at it from the angle of both being in a very ambiguous place, where I was a tourist, I was a teacher. I had been an invited artist from the government a year before, so I was-- I'd worked with the government. So, I just started recording daily life as I was experiencing it under those situations. But as I was painting this one landscape or cityscape, I just started to see the water cannons going to teargas, the smoke, and it was just rising and sort of engulfing the whole place, as I painted, I was just trying to add in the feeling of sort of onslaught of smoke and teargas.
