[ MUSIC ] AK47 assault rifles will officially become, Made in America. The Russian Weapons Company, an American company, just got the green light to start producing AK47s. That's because there's been a huge spike in demand for the assault rifle in the US. And gun stores all across America are selling out on them. But why the sudden demand? Well, it all traces back to the sanctions that the US imposed upon Russia in July of last year in response to Russia's role in the Ukraine Crisis. The United States is imposing new sanctions in key sectors of the Russian economy. Those sanctions have made it illegal for US companies to import AK- 47s from the only manufacturer in the world.

The Russian Kalashnikov group. The AK47 was developed by Russian General Mikhail Kalashnikov after World War II. And it's since become one the most popular weapons in the world. It's easy to use, it's cheap to make and it's reliable. But it's also become a symbol of unrest. From civil wars, drug conflict. Religious struggles, then revolutionary uprisings, the AK- 47 has been at the heart of chaos. But even so, that hasn't detracted from its appeal. The RWC, the American weapons company, has teamed up with the Kalashnikov Group, and together. They've create Kalashnikov, USA, which could begin production of the AK47 as early as April of 2015.
