## Transcript

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the loss of civilian lives and is deeply alarmed by the mounting toll on civilians. He extends his deepest condolences to the government and the people of Lebanon, and wishes a swift and full recovery to all the injured. Our colleagues on the ground tell us that today is a national day of mourning in Lebanon. Flags on government buildings and UN offices are flying at half staff. Lebanese authorities are reporting to us that more than 200 people were killed and more than a thousand injured. This is, of course, overwhelmed hospitals in the biggest wave of Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon since the beginning of this current escalation.

Many others are feared to be trapped under rubble as rescuers attempt to reach them. In terms of the latest developments. What we have seen in the past few hours, because the situation is very serious, we as European Union, we firmly condemn the recent attacks launched by Israel against Lebanon, which have caused a large number of casualties among the civil population and extensive extensive destruction of civilian infrastructure. Such actions represent a very serious escalation and an unacceptable threat to civilian lives and regional stability. This is why we reiterate the need for full respect of international law and humanitarian law, which require the protection of civilians.

And this at all times on this day of mourning. Allow me as well to express our deepest solidarity on behalf of the European Union with the people of Lebanon. Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and those affected by the severe level of violence, as well as the internally displaced people suffering across the country. What we are getting from the Minister of Health is over 200 deaths and over 1000 injuries, among them women and children. And also we have, you know, the first responders and healthcare workers were also reported the deaths. Many victims remain missing under the rebels.

And hospitals continue to receive reports of the unidentified bodies actually and body parts that has been recovered. This highlights the devastation of scale of this attack. I would like to appeal to the international community that we really need urgent resources and funds for us to continue, uh, assisting those people who are in need, whether it's health, shelter and all other sectors. Otherwise, we will be in a we will, we will not be able to provide those life saving interventions and support that we have unless we receive resources.
