[ MUSIC ] It still amazes me to realize that even though the public knew that he had had polio, they had no idea, really most people, that he could not walk on his own power. The extraordinary thing and the thing that's different from our time is that the press cooperated. People very rarely wrote about it. They said he was lame. The White House answered, would answer no questions about his. Polio at all. That's not a story, his his press secretary would say. They never saw him because there was an unwritten rule among the photographers never to take a picture of him with his braces on, in his wheelchair, on his crutches.

[ MUSIC ] It was in everyone's interest that people think he was able- bodied [ MUSIC ] The country needed him. And people bought it. The most important problem he faced, was to make himself seem as able bodied as he possibly could. And so he mastered a very laboroiously way of walking ,. Rather, a very laborious way of appearing to walk. He would hold on, grip like a lion, the arm of a very strong person on one side, and lean very heavily on a cane on the other side. And swing the sides of his body from. From his side foreword. His whole leg would be foot forward, and then the other side would be foot forward, and the other side would be foot forward.

It was painful, it was very slow, and it was very precarious. If he got jostled, if the wind blew too hard, he could go to the ground. [ MUSIC ] He was in constant fear that that was gonna happen. Just as the irons were clamped on his legs, the steel entered his soul, by having to fight through the constant pain. Of therapy that was unforgiving in it's demands and not very fulfilling in it's success. [ MUSIC ] Coming back as, even as far as he did, required enormous effort. Hours and hours of exercise, all of it aimed at somehow, magically, making his muscles work again [ MUSIC ] They never worked again.
