## Transcript

The first Americans aboard the cruise ship affected by the hantavirus outbreak have arrived in the U.S.. People have a lot of questions about how safe the public is from the virus. Here's what you need to know about hantavirus and what it means for you. In one minute. 18 passengers are being monitored in the U.S. for hantavirus, with at least one testing positive and another showing symptoms. All of the people from the ship will be held and evaluated at isolation facilities at the University of Nebraska or Emory University. It is my second day here at the National Quarantine Unit in Omaha, Nebraska.

They will be monitored for 42 days, and if in that time they don't show symptoms, they'll be allowed to return to their homes. Health officials at the World Health Organization and the U.S. CDC say hantavirus is not Covid. The virus can spread from person to person, but not as easily as the Covid virus does. The genetic sequences of the hantaviruses from the ship's passengers are almost identical to the sequences from previous outbreaks, meaning the virus is not getting better at spreading among people. So for now, the risk to the general public remains low and experts don't expect another pandemic.
