The Olympic sprinter's murder trial has been on hold for the last month so the 27 year old could undergo a psychiatric assessment. The finding? Mr Pistorius did not suffer from a mental defect or a mental illness at the time of the commission of the offense, that would have rendered him criminally not responsible for the offenses. George. While no conviction or acquittal has been handed down. The report show Pistorius was criminally responsible for killing his girlfriend Reva Steenkamp in February 2013. He was not suffering from a mental disorder and both the prosecution and the defense have accepted that assessment. The New York Times calls the conclusion critical, because defendants deemed unable to distinguish between right and wrong can be committed indefinitely to state mental institutions. Pistorius has admitted to shooting Steenkamp but says he mistook her for an intruder. What this means is Pistorius does not have the option to use mental health as a defence or mitigating factor, which undermines some earlier expert testimony from Pistorius's psychiatrist. It is my opinion, my lady, that Mr. Pistorius has an anxiety disorder. He was aware that he was a public figure, and believed that this made him at increased risk of being attacked or burgled. But as CNN notes, it's only that part of the testimony that'll be downgraded. It will not necessarily affect the earlier part of his, of her testimony where she spoke about the early influences in his life, and the impact that that's had on the way in which he engages with the world. The prosecution will now move forward with its theory Pistorius murdered Steenkamp in a quote, jealous rage. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 25 years in prison.
