>> In the chapter that you talk about your mother and father's different parenting style. You sort of-- you sort of almost don't mind the smacking because it means that the all the spanking, all the whacking around, because it means that you're, you know, the person was there, they were present.

>> Right. I mean, I don't know any Russian boy of my generation who hasn't met his father's, the back of his hand. I mean, that may sound horrible to, you know, people from Santa Monica. But in the way we grew up that was a part of it. I mean surely there are exceptions. But yes, I mean, when my father stopped smacking me around it was sad for me because I thought I really let him down. He doesn't love me at all now. Not even to the point of correcting my behavior, you know. So that felt very sad although he kept the verbal stuff up, so that was good, that made me feel loved.
