My name is Lucas and together with my friend Sean I want to talk to you about the Afghan box camera project. Now what is an Afghan box camera? It is a wooden box with a lens in the front and a viewing window in the back. The box is camera and darkroom at the same time. The chemicals are in the belly of the box, and the photographers develop the images right where they take them. Essentially, it is an instant camera. This kind of photography has been practiced in Afghanistan for a long time, and it is one of the last places on Earth where it is still in practice. But only just, It is literally on the brink of extinction and there is no proper documentation on the subject. Our goal is to make sure, myself as photographer and artist and Sean as anthropologist, to make a record of Afghan box camera photography before it disappears completely. With the help of many supporters on Kickstarter, we traveled last April and May for six weeks to Afghanistan, and found a huge photographic culture with many stories and fascinating techniques. The photoraphers who still work or have worked with the box cameras helped us to slowly understand the history of this wonderful tour. All the research with illustrated manuals and videos, on how to build a box camera, or take a photo with it. As well as research blocks, portfolios and technical information are on our website. And the reactions to the research have been really positive. Photographic magazines, blogs, photographic sensors, journalists and academics, There are photo students who want to build these cameras, and even a teacher in New York who taught his students the basics of photography using our material. But it is not enough, the history of the camera and the photographers using it deserve more. We have finalized a publishing deal for a book. And we want to set out again in April to travel to different cities and provinces in Afghanistan. Last year, we focused on Kabul and Mazar- i- Sharif in the north. This year, we will enter from Iran and start our research in Herat, where we will travel all the way to Fayzabad close to the Tajik border, as well as Jalalabad, east of Kabul. But for this we need to cover the costs. Return flights, local flights, ground transportation, translators, visa accommodation and living costs.
