## Transcript

A major rescue effort is underway off the coast of South Korea after a ferry carrying more than 450 passengers sank Wednesday. Four have been confirmed dead so far, with 55 injured and nearly 300 passengers still missing. A majority of the ship's passengers were just high school students and teachers headed to Jeju, a resort island off the coast. People on board said they heard a bump. Sounds like, oh, they must have hit something. The water here is very well charted and very deep. So that's unusual. And immediately survivors say the ship started listing. The announcement told us we should stay still, the student who scrambled to safety said.

But the ship was already sinking and there were a lot of students who did not get out of the ship. Local media outlet, YTN had initially reported all students and teachers were safely rescued from the ship, but The Korean Herald is now reporting a staff worker aboard the ship and a student have both been identified and confirmed dead. We were first told that 368 people had been rescued. That number has now been corrected. In fact only 180 have been accounted for, at the last check. [ NOISE ] Now at least 18 helicopters, 34 vessels and special operations divers are on the scene. They received the stress signal around 9: 00 AM local time.

It's not clear why the ship ran into difficulties, although heavy fog have set in overnight, leading to cancellations of many ferry services to the islands. But the Coast Guard insists the conditions were good where the ship went down. The biggest problem might be how quickly it sank. The speed with which this ship went down was quite incredible, and I think left many people scrambling to try and ascertain where everybody was. Now worried parents are demanding answers while they wait for more information in a suburban high school near Seoul. Thanks for watching. I'm Lauren Juarez.
