## Transcript

It's important to know your history because when you begin to reflect on the past you'll know how to better move forward in the future. [ MUSIC ] A lot of the elders have told me that if you do not learn your history you're doomed to repeat it. And I see that's what happening today. Knowing your history both on a personal level, and a broader level is important. I think about the ways that my own family struggle coming to this country as immigrants. On a larger scale, those are lessons for us, and those can be the tools that we need to guide us for our future decisions. When we don't know our history or when we don't acknowledge it, or we fail to reconcile what's happened with where we are.

That's when we really get into trouble. Because we're being dishonest and we're not able to then really address what's happening. People have all gone through a similar walk. They've all either been minorities at one time or another. They've all been targeted at one time or another. Then that moves on and it goes on to another group of people. Something that I see that gives me hope is seeing how people over the past year or two have really united and come together to welcome the refugees that are coming into the country. To say, you know what, we are more similar than we think and we have more that unites us than divides us.
