I'm here at the Bowery Ballroom in Lower Manhattan and I'm about to talk to you the band Yeasayer which is a Brooklyn- based experimental band. This is the first single off their new album Odd Blood. If you're noticing that it's sort of a mashup of triple time African beats with psychedelic funhouse atmospherics you'll see why everyone has a hard time coming up with the label for these guys. On the other hand it's poppy as thoroughly melodic, ingredients for an ear- pleasing genre- transcending hit. I'll let two- thirds of the band Ira Wolf Tuton and Chris Keating explain more. >> We got excited about sort of making kind of like somewhat trashy dance music and trying to make it so it wasn't so trashy, you know, and trying to, you know, combine a bunch of different elements together to make something that was sort of like make it move around a little bit. >> Yes. >> You know. >> And it's also interesting I think for us to take back things that genres or whatever you, you know, different styles of music that for a while if people have regurgitated them or touch on them they've done it in an ironic way and, you know, I'd rather touch on things. You know I love dance music from the early 90's. I grew up in that era of loving all that kind of pop music. So I'd rather be genuine about it and try and re- contextualize that style of music and be honest about what we're trying to do and, you know, that's okay. >> One of the contrasts between the last record and now was important. >> Last track it was just a wall. >> This sound it makes me it sounded different the last record. That was the number 1 goal. >> You can hear what Ira means when you compare Ambling Alp to this heavily- layered song of their debut album All Hour Cymbals. The album was a surprise hit when it came out in 2007, and it even garnered to mention on Pitchfork's Top 50 Albums of the Year. But wait. I mentioned two- thirds of the band. So who else is there? Anand Wilder, he's sort of the breakout star of this breakout album with lead vocals and writing credits on more than half the songs. He wrote the band's next major single One. So with this newer emphasis on melody and universal themes, online reaction to Odd Blood has been a frothing level of excitement. I asked Ira and Chris if they thought they were on the verge of a breakout. >> Well, you know, honestly like you're just kind of in it and we don't really see that anything has changed. We're just kind of keeping our nose to the grindstone trying to work and make something we like. >> Yes. Let's see what happens. We gotta get on tour first. We haven't really toured on this record. We're only relying on, you know, our only connections to whatever is happening with our band as you telling us that and-- >> Yes. >> Asking our reactions, so-- >> And very good responses to totally like a bad one. >> Yes. >> People were like oh these guys suck now. I like their last album. Yes. I've totally like read that or heard that and that's cool. >> And with that, they'll take their experimental sound on the road this year.
