Delegate --- ## Transcript >> Some 100 hundred world leaders gathered in New York today, where the United Nations played host to the highest level summit meeting on climate change ever convened. President Obama and Chinese president Hu Jintao were among those who spoke at today's meeting. Hu Jintao announced new goals to slow the growth of China's carbon dioxide emissions. >> First, we will intensify our effort to conserve energy and improve energy efficiency. >> President Obama said failure to act could lead to an irreversible catastrophe. >> Our generation's response to this challenge will be judged by history. For if we fail to meet it boldly, swiftly, and together, we risk consigning future generations to an irreversible catastrophe. >> What they said will be considered closely since China and the United States are the world's top greenhouse gas emitters, accounting for more than 40 percent of the world total. The U. N. Climate Summit comes just a day after the International Energy Agency said that carbon dioxide, the most common greenhouse gas from fossil fuel burning would fall by roughly 2. 6 percent due to the global recession. But with the worldwide economy's recent turn toward recovery, many experts are still looking for nations across the globe, particularly the world's most industrialized nations, to commit to reducing greenhouse gases. Today's summit was not a negotiation. But it is considered an important tune- up for a massive conference in December in Copenhagen, where 190 nations will try to come to an agreement on what to do about climate change.
